When gas was cheap, and hopes were high. I found some old receipts for gasoline purchased by my father in 1968, from a local fuel supplier. We had a above ground 250 gallon tank with a fuel pump & meter, that the supplier would come and fill about once a month. The first receipt is dated 1-9-68, for 200 gallons of Marathon Mile-Maker gasoline. The price, including four cents Federal tax and six cents state tax: a whopping 27 1/2 cents per gallon.
Of course, at that time, my dad's job as a heavy equipment operator probably paid around $7/hr. Which was relatively good pay for this area.
At the time, I was a Freshman in high school, and witnessing the end of innocence for this country. Kennedy, Vietnam, anti-war protests, social upheaval. I was looking forward to getting my driver's license.
I miss the gas prices.
